Day 16 Friday 4th June:

Awake early - as usual - breakfasted and returned to Lewes for a more thorough visit. Wandered over into High Street and pondered on the significance of the Court House, built 1081, to the Hoggett family. The Huggett brothers, John and James, were sentenced here for sheep stealing, among other things, in 1836. We are all pleased that they had a bad day back in 1836. Sentenced to death, they and we, were lucky that it was commuted to transportation for life - Van Diemen's Land here we come.

My great grandfather, John Huggett, lived the rest of his life in Tasmania. We ventured to the castle for as closer look - the atmosphere of the town seems to be created by the looming presence of the castle. Great for early morning tourists. We wandered around many of the narrow paths and lanes, bordered by 14th and 15th century houses. Quite a picture.

After this we made out way to Sheffield Park where again we were stunned by the beauty of the gardens - a capability Brown creation. Just magnificent - colurs, reflections, water, trees and plants - its has it all. Another great day!

But more to come. We still had time to take in the architectural rich and fabric design trend setter of the 1890s in Standon. Helene particularly was in awe of of the fabric desins, wallpapers and the tiles. All Morrison orginal designs which we now see in the Sanderson ranges. Headed off to Crabtree for the evening. Phewwwww!
